Streetworks/Road closures

Information and useful contacts for Street Works projects taking place in Birmingham city centre

National Grid – West Midlands Gas Alliance works

From January 2012, gas pipeline company, National Grid, started work on renewing old gas pipes as part of a major £10 million project to improve the gas network in Birmingham city centre.

The whole project will take around three years to complete, with city centre works completed  by late summer. Throughout the works more than six miles of old metal gas mains will be replaced with new plastic pipe. If left undisturbed, the new pipe will last around 80 years with little or no maintenance.

The work is being carried out by the West Midlands Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and leading utilities company Morgan Sindall. The project is part of National Grid’s 30 year programme to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network by replacing all metal gas pipes that lie within 30 metres of property.

Birmingham City Centre Interchange

Work has started on Birmingham City Centre Interchange which will deliver a major upgrade to bus passenger facilities in the city centre as
well as facilitating a major overhaul of bus routes, interchanges and bus stops.

The project provides newly designed shelters, bus flags and other passenger facilities including easy to follow information to encourage
public transport and walking journeys.

The City Centre Interchange project including related highway works has started and will take place over the next 8 months. The
construction phase is underway and will be carefully planned to minimise disruption with careful consideration given to busy retail periods. This project will be completed before the main construction work starts on Midland Metro.

Birmingham City Centre Metro Extension

The Birmingham City Centre Extension (BCCE) will take Midland Metro from its current terminus at Snow Hill and extend it into the
heart of the city to New Street Station.

This route ensures that high quality public transport links serve and support the ‘Gateway’ scheme and maximise the benefits of the
regeneration of the station and the surrounding area in a deliverable and affordable way.

The proposed route runs for 1.4 kilometres through Birmingham city centre continuing from the existing track south of the current St Paul’s tram stop.

A new stop to be called Snow Hill will be constructed on the existing railway viaduct at Livery Street/Lionel Street. This stop will provide
interchange with national and local rail services at Snow Hill Station using the secondary access, and access to the neighbouring Ballymore development and those in the nearby Gun Quarter and Great Charles and Lionel Streets.

From the Snow Hill stop, the route leaves the existing Metro corridor and continues on a newly constructed viaduct through the Ballymore
Development adjacent to Snow Hill Station and then onstreet along Colmore Circus Queensway, into Bull Street before turning onto Corporation Street across New Street and into Stephenson Street. A stop will be located on Stephenson Street providing interchange with New Street Station.

Birmingham New Street Gateway Project  - Network Rail

This Gateway project will transform the existing 1960s-built station into a bright and modern 21st century transport hub for Birmingham and
the West Midlands. It will be exactly the kind of station passengers deserve and the people of Birmingham can be proud of.

The new station will stimulate the physical regeneration of the areas surrounding the station, with the new John Lewis department store on
the south side of the station creating up to 1000 new jobs. The plans support the extension of the Midland Metro tram system that will run through the heart of the city, terminating at New Street station.

Work has been planned to ensure the impact on passengers is kept to a minimum by closing only one platform at a time, ensuring use of the
station and Pallasades shopping centre throughout development.

The redevelopment of New Street station is backed by Network Rail, Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands, Centro and the
Department for Transport. It will be delivered by Network Rail, in partnership with Mace.
